A journey of kaleidoscopic color, awe-inspiring vistas and dramatic history, this circuit brings you face-to-face with all the destinations that make India loom large in the imagination. You’ll be swept away by the buzzing energy of Delhi, enchanted by the princely state of Rajasthan and rub shoulders with mystics, priests and vendors in the oldest living city in the world, Varanasi.

Perhaps no other world capital is as steeped in history as Delhi. Mongols, Turks, Persians, Afghans, Mughals and British have all ruled here—and contributed to its glorious and turbulent past. Exploration by way of a twisting ride through Old Delhi via cycle rickshaw before visits to the largest mosque in India and the memorial of Gandhi.

The wonders of Udaipur, the “Lake City,” unfold at a more tranquil pace. Ride on the patchwork of manmade lakes, wander through the stunning City Palace and the Jagdish Temple, an Indo-Aryan architectural masterpiece decorated with elephants and intricate pillars, carved ceilings, and a black stone image of Vishnu as Jagannath, Lord of the Universe.

The “Pink City,” Jaipur, is a fairy tale land of rose-colored forts, magnificent palaces and more exquisite temples. Soak up the exhilarating energy of the bazaars, browsing silversmiths, turban sellers and ceramic crafts before being transported into a bygone era within the walls of the Amber Fort, the Palace of Winds and the grand City Palace.

But perhaps no building in the world is more grand than India’s crown jewel, the Taj Mahal. There’s nothing like seeing it as the first light of day warms the gleaming white stone—aptly described by Nobel Prize-winning poet Rabindranath Tagore as “a teardrop on the face of eternity.”

More unforgettable testaments to love are written in stone In Khajuraho, including the famous erotic stone carvings that decorate the city’s temples. The passionate sculptures in the Western Group of temples are considered among the finest temple art in the world.

The “Eternal City,” Varanasi, sits astride the banks of the storied Ganges River, whose waters are said to wash away the sins of the world. As an illuminated aarti ceremony begins and golden lamps reflect across its currents, it’s a feast for the senses—and a chance to reflect on India’s eternal spell.
