Today brings memorable sightseeing as you travel back through time and meet the once-powerful empire of the Khmers as you visit the well-preserved remains of Angkor. Built between 900-1200 AD, the 90-square-mile city is believed to have had as many as 15 million inhabitants at the height of the Khmer empire in the 1300s. Foremost among the monumental relics you will visit are Angkor Thom, a fortified royal city including Baphoun, Bayon and the Terrace of Elephants, and the jungle-covered ruins of Ta Prohm. The afternoon is justly reserved for Cambodia's most famous landmark, Angkor Wat. This religious citadel is one of the largest temple complexes in the world. The sight of its dome awash in the liquid gold of sunset is truly breathtaking.
